1 acknowledge
ACKNOWLEDGE, OWN, CONFESS, ADMITAcknowledge, own, confess и admit 'признавать, признаваться' – синонимы. В переходном значении acknowledge употребляется в сочетании с прямым дополнением, выраженным существительным, герундием или придаточным дополнительным предложением, вводимым союзом that: to acknowledge one's ignorance, to acknowledge being ignorant, to acknowledge that one is ignorant и т. д. Confess и own могут сочетаться и с предложным дополнением и в этом случае часто взаимозаменяются: to confess (to own) to a weakness for wine, to confess (to own) to having neglected one's duty. Own может употребляться, помимо этого, в сочетании с возвратным местоимением: to own oneself defeated. Admit (и частично acknowledge и own) предполагает признание чего-л. вне субъекта: to admit (to acknowledge) another man's abilities, to own the force of an argument. Admit и acknowledge могут взаимозаменяться, сохраняя, однако, иногда различие в оттенках значения: admit может предполагать вынужденный характер признания, acknowledge – его публичность. Confess всегда имеет в виду признание своих собственных предосудительных или преступных действий: to confess a theft (a crime), to confess one's guilt, to confess that one has done wrong.Difficulties of the English language (lexical reference) English-Russian dictionary > acknowledge
